The count is based on the Mayan calendar or the calendar wheel. the Chol Q'ij calendar system is divided into a succession of glyphs of 20 unique days. The 20 nahuales represent energy, spirit or power of beings and elements of nature. According to the Mayan worldview, they symbolize, personify and link each person with the environment, thus establishing balance.
